Cristian Hernández is an expert in spatial analysis and data visualization. He works as a consultant for nonprofit organizations and start-up’s in Europe and Latin America. Cristian is currently leading a citizen data science project on light pollution called “Octal”, part of the Stars4All Program (EU funded). He has trained people in data science methods and visualization during the last two years.
This workshop will be run on a number of dates throughout the year, depending on demand.

It will be approximately 5 hours long and run on one day or two evenings.

Tools you will use

We aim to use accessible tools that are open or free wherever possible. During this workshop you will use the following tools: Google Sheets, Open Refine and RAW Don't worry if you have not used (or heard!) of these before, by the end of the workshop you will understand what they can do as well as when and how to use them.

Access to the Fireside:
The Fireside is the home of Data Campfire's online community. You will gain access to an exclusive learning zone within the Fireside. Here you can keep in touch with peers, share, give and ask for support.

We are becoming increasing surrounded by data, at times unable to cope with it all. Shockingly, a recent report claims that only 0.5% of all the data is actually being used and analysed!

One way to make sense of and use data is to visualise it, by presenting it in a graphical or pictorial format. Visualising data can help us understand and communicate more effectively. One of the reasons for this is that our brains can process visual information 60,000 times faster than text. This makes visualising data a quick and effective way to:

  • Comprehend information quickly
  • Identify patterns and relationships
  • Spot emerging trends
  • Communicate the story to others

Our introductory 1-day course aims to provide a practical approach to learning the basic process of working with data, from finding it, cleaning it and then turning it into visuals that you can then take forward and extend even further should you wish to do so.

Office Hours:
Weekly office hours will be held at the Fireside so you can get any questions you may have answered faster from our trainers.
